Question

Can you talk about Effort and Morality, such as making the effort to go buy your own bucket, rather than borrowing and then forgetting to return it to your neighbors?

Answer

Yes, we need effort to put our morality into action. Right View and Right Intention bring about more morality. Because unless we have Right Intention to cause less harm to ourselves and others, it is very difficult to bring about Right Action. So, if we develop more Compassion to ourselves and others, we don't want to cause inconvenience for ourselves or others. So true morality, as far as I can understand, comes from developing a right intention.

When we have more compassion, we have more energy, because we are not just motivated by selfish desires. So compassion helps to bring about more effort, Right Effort, the effort to develop beneficial qualities, the Four Great Efforts, the effort to let go of laziness, those hindrances, the effort to develop beneficial qualities and cause less harm to ourselves and others, and make less difficulties for ourselves and others. Morality is based in compassion. When we have compassion in our mind, we have a lot more energy.
