Question

Would you say in the development of Renunciation, that trying to let go of anger, hatred, greed and conceit, etc., is a more important focus than stuff like food desires, sex, buying too many clothes or comforting goods?

Answer

Certainly, if you're trying to let go of anger, hatred, greed and conceit, it's going to end in a person being much more content. Trying to attack these other things without developing more antidotes to anger, hatred and all these other things - that is Compassion, Lovingkindness and everything, it's going to be very difficult to replace this worldly desire with anything that is going to feel satisfying, internally satisfying, so you'll continue to feed the causes for suffering within yourself, and seek outside to get some pleasure to let go of it for a little while. So, of course, yes, letting go of the negative emotions will often lead to more contentment, which brings about a natural renunciation.
