Question

Could you please speak in more detail about why when we are dying, we can depend upon the good actions that we have done. Is there anything else except practicing the Paramis that makes good Kamma?

Answer

Ok, the first one: Buddhism teaches that your thoughts at the moment of death have a great influence on your next birth. Now, first you have a balance with your Kamma, you have good Kamma, you have bad Kamma and that is going to affect your next birth. If you have a lot of good Kamma, then you will have a good rebirth. If you have a lot the other way, you are not going to have a good rebirth. So your Kamma itself, everything you have done in this life plus whatever is from your former lives, is going to push you in a certain way towards your next life. But the thoughts at the very moment of death have an extra push, they can make you go one way or the other.

Even if you have done a lot of good Kamma and you are supposed to get a good rebirth, if you start having angry, negative thoughts when you die, you actually swing that way and you get born according to your bad Kamma. Interesting? So when you are dying depending on the goodness that you have done is very helpful, but it's also important to guard your thoughts at the moment you are dying.

Now one nice little thing concerning what I just said, is that when you have a lot of goodness and a little bit of bad stuff, and when you die you think negatively, this stuff takes over and you might get reborn in an unhappy place, but because it was so little, you will only have a short life there and then you get reborn on the good side. This is helpful to know, but really, we would rather not go there at all, right? So guarding your thoughts at the moment of death is very helpful.

Is there anything else except practicing the Paramis that makes good Kamma? Well, you could find other things that aren't listed in the Paramis, but anything that is good is good and is doing good Kamma. We don't have to limit good Kamma just to the Ten Paramis, there may be other words or phrases, and other types of actions that would still make good Kamma even though they are not one of the Ten Paramis.
