Question

Is it important for a Buddhist to have been to the places where the Buddha was born, got enlightened and died?

Answer

We have had a few of our old students go to those places and say that they were surprised by how much it increased their faith, that they didn't expect this to happen. If you have the opportunity, it would probably be a good thing for you to do, to be able to do; but not just to go there with the intention that it is just a thing to do, but rather to actually contemplate that the Buddha was there, and he was a human being, and to contemplate what he did at that time, and I think this would give the power to develop more faith/confidence. In the scriptures, he does encourage people to visit these places if they are able to do so.

One thing that Steve and I do, when we look at the moon at night, is a reflection that has helped us to feel more connected with the Buddha - to contemplate that the Buddha saw the same moon. With this contemplation, we understand that he was a human being who walked on this earth, and this helps to increase confidence.

So I would imagine that if you went to these places and considered what the Buddha did at these places, it would have a similar effect; because you would be contemplating the Buddha, and this is, in itself, a very powerful meditation; it is one of my favorites, reflecting on the qualities of the Buddha, especially in overcoming fear and reminding myself of my inner potential, which gives courage.
