Question

Can you talk more about how to prevent ourselves from falling into complacency and laziness, and how to get out of it again?

Answer

The Number One thing to prevent complacency and laziness, the Number One thing, is to have a friend, a good kind wise spiritual friend, if you can. A Kalyanamitta. Somebody who is going to push you, somebody who is going to say, "Hey, come on, we need it! You know, it is so hard." If a person gets into complacency and laziness all alone, what is going to happen? They are going to stay in their complacency and laziness; they are not going to get out of it at all. So when you are stuck in it, it is very, very hard to get out of it unless somebody says to you, "Hey, come on!", that is all you need, somebody else.

Now, how to make sure there is somebody else? Keep in contact with your good Kamma friends, keep in contact. It is so easy today, you don't even need to live in the same town. There is email, there is Skype. How many of you know about Skype? Raise your hand if you do - not all of you -Skype is a free telephone service available by the internet, it is free! Now, if you have a fancy new computer you may have a video camera built into it already, or if you have an old one you can get a little camera; then you can see each others" bodies. The picture is not the best yet, but it is neat and you can feel connected with your friends.

Now, if you make it a regular action that you contact your friends and you make sure that it is done regularly, then maybe you will find that they are in a state of complacency and laziness when you contact them, or maybe vice versa. Who then gets a recharge? Both of you will get a recharge, especially the person who is stuck in their complacency, laziness, whatever. So you can do this not only with friends that you have close by, but nowadays it is so easy to keep in contact with your friends all around the world.

So make good contact with your Dhamma friends and they will help you to avoid you getting into complacency and laziness.
