Question

Do you have special methods or techniques for sadness?

Answer

Whom do you know who is happy and charged in the Dhamma? You can get over sadness by getting a recharge. How many of you come into the interviews and it is not the best day of your life, and you are a bit down. When you leave the interview, do you feel any better? We hope so. We know that generally any person leaving the interview is feeling better than when they came in. So that is a way to get over sadness, to talk to somebody who can actually inspire you and cheer you up. And we are right back again to what we talked a bit about before, about complacency and so on, to have a good friend, Kalyanamitta, who can help you get over sadness.

Now, what if you don't have a good friend and you basically know that you are feeling sad? What did I say last night about feeling negativities to yourself or any problems regarding your past? Reflect on your good past Kamma - reflect on things that you have done that are good. When sadness comes, what is the reason? It is because we are reflecting on things we have done that are not good or on what we don't have; or we are reflecting on loss, we are reflecting on pain, we are reflecting normally on one or more of the eight worldly dhammas that are on the negative side. So in order to change those thoughts we have to reflect on what we do have, our gains, especially the Dhamma itself. When you are alone, reflect on the things that you do have, that helps you to get over the sadness that comes from reflecting on what you don't have.

And if you are not alone talk to somebody else who can inspire you and cheer you up, and then the sadness will hopefully go away.
