There is a bit in the scriptures where the Buddha actually talked about what a husband should do for his wife, and what a wife should do for her husband, and on both sides he said that they should give gifts to each other. So in a partnership, it is very helpful to give gifts to each other; and not just on birthdays, anniversaries, surprise them, make it special.
