Question

Could you please talk about dealing with restlessness, especially during the walking?

Answer

If you are feeling restless, it is helpful, as we advise, to slow down. Walk more slowly. Try to be aware of the subtle changes in the legs and the feet, noting the action more continuously and precisely. The mental noting can help to replace the excessive energy in the mind. It is quite important to look and see, if we can, where this restlessness is originating. Perhaps it is originating from desire. If this is the case, it may be helpful to even stop for a minute or so and to feel the unsatisfactoriness, the agitation in the body. You can also bring up Compassion for yourself and then reflect on death, because you may not be there in the future to fulfill whatever you are wanting. So if it is desire, try to note that more precisely. Oftentimes, restlessness does come from desire or worry, so observe that. Sometimes, if it is just a restlessness that arises because we feel restrained, because we would like to be able to go and run at the beach (which is desire, anyway), it might be helpful, while we are standing there, to do a D/D reflection for others who might be more confined than ourselves - perhaps people in wheelchairs who would like to be able to even just walk, as you are walking. This may help to lessen the desire in the mind and make you understand how fortunate you are just to be walking. So, to deal with restlessness, look and see where it is actually coming from; usually it is desire or future thoughts.
