Question

How do we stay in the present moment when/if we wish to act compassionately for ourselves and others and have to look ahead for possible outcomes, likely results, etc.?

Answer

When we are contemplating possible outcomes or likely results, we are in the present moment contemplating cause and effect. When we say 'come into the present moment,' we do not mean just to be in the present moment without clear comprehension of how our decisions and our intentions will affect the future. That is just awareness without clear comprehension. Just staying in the moment is not what we are after, because we may be staying in the moment in a very unbeneficial way. For example, a thief can be mindful. They can mindfully walk into the place where they want to steal, they can mindfully stay in the moment while they are opening the safe and they can be mindful when they take the money. So Mindfulness is not enough.

We are not staying in the moment just to be in the moment. We need Mindfulness and clear comprehension of how this moment affects the future. That is, we need Right Understanding or understanding of Kamma. In order to protect who we will become in the future, having Compassion for the person we may become, we need clear comprehension of cause and effect. This is linking our Mindfulness with Wisdom. This is a very important point because a lot of people are misunderstanding the practice and leaving out this very important clear comprehension of cause and effect. Without clear comprehension, we can have Mindfulness without Wisdom. Mindfulness is the seventh factor of the Noble Eightfold Path and Wisdom (that is, the understanding of cause and effect) is the first. If we are practicing just being in the moment, we may not be practicing the Mindfulness that is in the Noble Eightfold Path; we may be practicing awareness that is not founded in Right Understanding, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, and Right Concentration.
