Question

People often talk about world peace. What is you perspective on this?

Answer

Okay, today the world is actually very peaceful if you compare it to history. Go back 70 years, the world was not very peaceful. Go back 90 years, the world was not very peaceful. Wars, famines, one country conquering the other country and so on, these events are throughout history, this has always been happening. But the world today is actually a fairly peaceful place. There are some small-scale wars but no major world war.

However, world peace, in the sense of what is my perspective is on it, it would be lovely if everyone was at peace. It would be lovely if there were no more wars, it would be lovely if everyone who is starving would get the food that was sent to their country for them. If would be lovely if there was no more greed on that planet, no more selfish dictators and so on, but it is not going to happen. And this is the Buddhist perspective, in this day of age, it is not going to happen. I agree with that.

However, Buddhism does predict that at some point in the future there will come a time when there actually is world peace. The entire world will be ruled by one king who is very wise, very kind, very compassionate, very loving. And there are no wars, and there is no famine for some period of time, but it doesn't last. It does change and things become as they are here now. So from the Buddhist perspective, some day in the future there will be world peace, I have no idea if that is something that will actually happen but this is what Buddhist theories state. From my lifetime's perspective, 60 years, the world has actually become more peaceful. But, as to world peace coming, no I can't imagine that.
