Question

Yesterday Steve talked about abortion. What do you think about the claim of some women to have the right to be the boss over their own body, and that it is up to them to decide whether to abort or not. What about the Kammic consequences for the women who do abort and the doctor who does it?

Answer

We have two different questions here. 1st: What about the claim that women have the right to be the boss over their own body. Well, I don't believe that women have the right to kill a living being. So are we talking about being boss over physical matter or are we talking about living beings? These are two different things. When a woman thinks about her body just as a body, some material stuff, the thoughts can come "I think I will change the shape of my nose, I'll change my breasts, I'll lose some weight, I'll gain some muscle, I'll dye my hair." If the woman thinks of herself as the shape of her body, then sure she can make all sorts of changes to it. But the minute you actually think of another living being, then it is a whole different concept, it is a whole different view. We don't agree with the fact that women have the right to be the boss and decide to kill another living being.

The 2nd part of the question here is: What about the Kammic consequences for the women who do abort and the doctor who does it? According to Buddhism it depends on intention. As far as the doctors go, it is almost always a negative kind of Kammic event because they know very well what they are doing. For a lot of women, they don't always really know what they are doing. The intention is not so clear and due to the fear, the worry and a lot of psychological problems that can come, the Kammic consequence may not be as heavy. Ok - trying to work out Kamma, it is impossible and the Buddha once said if you try to work out Kamma with your own intellectual brain you are going to go insane. So I can't really tell you the full Kammic consequences, but what we have personally seen in interviews with women who have had abortions is already enough pain in their own life. Many have a lot of regret. We help them with that; we help them to understand how to work with it. So it is an unpleasant Kammic consequence for people involved in abortions.
