Question

Is there a teacher or other authority in Theravadin Buddhism you respect most. What do you think about the Dalai Lama?

Answer

As to respect, Rosemary and I have been helped by a lot of different teachers and we respect each one of them. It doesn't always mean that we like everything that they do, but we respect them for what they do for others. Almost all of our teachers fit in that category. There is no one that we currently go to visit on a regular basis because we never kind of clicked with a particular teacher thinking he or she is perfect for us so that we want to go and visit them regularly. We don't have a personal teacher in that way.

What do you think about the Dalai Lama? The Dalai Lama is the head teacher in a different tradition, the Mahayana tradition of Tibet. I personally have seen and heard some of his teachings that I do not approve of. He personally has never helped me and I feel there are problems with some of what he does. I personally am not interested in learning from him.
