Question

Can you explain what is done with dead bodies in the tradition of Theravadin Buddhism. What are the funerals in Thailand like?

Answer

Normally they bring the dead body to a ceremony and they have a lot of chanting, sometimes for over a week. They do the chanting and make merit for the dead person. Then the body is cremated. At the funeral, a lot of the family brings together gifts to give to people in the name of the dead person. Sometimes they bring Dhamma books and sometimes other gifts in the name of the person. It is usually a big family affair. At some of the funerals I went to, they burnt the body in the middle of the monastery on a big pile of wood and you could see the body burning. Our abbot who died three years ago was burnt in the middle of the monastery in front of everybody. We could see the body burning and then they collected all the ashes and put them in an urn. It depends on the monastery and the resources they have. Many Wats just have cremation ovens. Steve watched one funeral on some logs in a woods.
