Question

Is it possible to teach children a simple form of food reflection? They seem quite absorbed by liking and even more by disliking.

Answer

Yes. It is not hard to give them a simple form. Whether they actually understand it or not, that is a whole different thing. Whether they can apply it or not is a whole different thing. So, you can help them to learn a little simple form, but don't expect that they are going to have the same wisdom as you do. That is the difference. It is very touchy with teaching kids, because they don't have the life experience.

This is an example: There is an old student who had a ten-year old son I think, and they brought the kid up with Buddhist principles a lot, not to be greedy and selfish and this and that. As much as they taught him about happiness and how fortunate they are that they have so much when other kids don't have so much, the fact was the ten-year old didn't have the wisdom the adult had. And one day the whole thing blew up for this family in particular. The ten-year old wanted another soccer ball, they had a plastic one but they wanted a real one, a leather one. They asked Daddy for one, Daddy said, "No, your other ball is still good, you should be happy that you have one, other kids don't have one." The kid blew up and said, "This Buddhist stuff is too much." And ran out of the room. The kid didn't have the understanding. All of his other ten-year old friends get leather balls, right. Every one on the street had one and the kid is at school with them for six or eight hours a day, they are at home for eight or whatever, but they are back at school with the other kids and the influence of the kids is something that parents have to be aware of.

Parents often put their Buddhist ideals onto children of five or ten, or whatever, and have unrealistic expectations. Be careful about that.

In simple form, you can try to help your children, you may be able to instill a little in there, but don't be idealistic about what they can actually absorb and how well they can apply it.
