Question

The Seven Factors of Enlightenment and the Ten Paramis are contained in the Noble Eightfold Path. Please could you explain this in more detail?

Answer

How many hours do we have? Is somebody being greedy here? This is a bit much. The Seven Factors of Enlightenment, the Ten Paramis, the Noble Eightfold Path, you know we can talk about it in depth for a long time. So, is this person maybe looking for how they relate to each other, because relating them to each other is a very interesting thing, and you can actually do this for yourself. Also in the 20-day retreat, one of the meditations that we teach is taking the 10 Paramis and taking them in pairs, reflecting on them in pairs. So you take generosity and morality, for starters, and reflect, how do they relate? If they do relate to each other, if sometimes they come together, did one of them come first and then the other follows? Or can they actually arise together? And you take every different pair and there are 10 Paramis and therefore 45 pairs, it takes more than one hour to do this meditation, but you actually reflect for yourself, how do they relate? This helps us to understand the Paramis more fully and how they can actually work together.

This is kind of neat, because you know we are looking at Ten Paramis and think, ok, I take Generosity for a week. I do this, I do that for a week, maybe, which is a nice thing in your normal life to do, but the fact is when you give, is it only just generosity or is there renunciation in there? And is it such a nice thing to do which is good for your morality, or are you doing it because you are thinking it is a smart thing to do, "I should give", then it is the wisdom part, and it is a compassionate and lovingkind act to actually give. Well, you are already seeing how just the act of giving ties in the other Paramis.

So to actually go through them in your meditation as pairs is an interesting thing and you are able to see more how they relate to each other. You can also tie in the Seven Factors of Enlightenment to each Parami. That would take you to 70 pairs there, although you wouldn't do equanimity with equanimity, would you? You would skip that pair. But it would be very interesting if you took each Parami and look at it in the light of the Seven Factors of Enlightenment. So, as far as explaining them in more detail, I think all of you have quite a bit of information in there, but why not open them up in your meditation, investigating in more detail inside yourself and see how far you can go.
