Question

When does human life start from the Buddha's point of view? Right after the sperm and egg merged?

Answer

Yes, according to Buddhism, human life starts right after the sperm and egg merge. Life starts that early. And we don't actually have to just "believe" this, because they have so many machines that show the human form even when they used to think that it was just a mass of cells. This is what in the beginning they thought, "oh, it doesn't start yet." But now they have these scans and they are able to see the human form from a very, very early time, so it is not just a mess of cells as a lot of people previously believed. We are aware of one of the doctors who supported abortion in the early times, believing that this was good, and now he has turned the other way from pro-choice to pro-life, because of these scans and the ability to see the emotion of the unborn child, even though at a very early time. Having seen how feotuses react to things that are put close to them, he changed to pro-life, because of the sensitivity that he developed towards the living being.
