Question

Does every cloud have a silver lining?

Answer

For those of you who do not understand this quote I will explain it a little. Clouds bring rain, thunder, lightening, and they block the beautiful sunshine; but the thought of a silver lining means that there is always something nice, even within the darkness of a cloud. Isn't that very similar to the saying "Good luck, bad luck, who knows?" Yeah, it is. So I guess every cloud does have a silver lining.

There are endless possibilities of anything that happens to you. There are really endless possibilities. It's up to you, in your reaction, that's going to determine the outcome of whatever comes to you. You've heard me say, "Pleasant things come to you, unpleasant things come to you, neutral things come to you. You can't always choose what comes to you. But how you react to whatever comes to you - that's what you can change". So learning to be mindful of your reactions is a major part of the practice. If you react wisely, with proper consideration, with compassionate understanding, then normally good things will come to you, you are going to see that silver lining. But if you lack that wisdom, if you lack that compassionate understanding, if you get angry, afraid, and everything else; then it is possible there won't be much silver lining in there. So it's all in your reactions, whether you produce more happiness out of any situation that comes to you.
