Question

Sometimes I say stupid things, I'm not sure why, probably to please people. Afterwards I get a bit annoyed with myself and the other person who could think I'm stupid. What can I do to change this?

Answer

If it is to try to please people, then we can reflect on the eight worldly conditions: praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and pain, and fame and obscurity. The more we reflect on these the more we can see that getting praise from others is not the true source of happiness, neither is blame the true source of suffering. The true source of happiness and the true source of suffering lies within ourselves. Have more compassion for yourself and try not to say stupid things. Working with the eight worldly dhammas will help.
