Question

What are the benefits of self-discipline? How to develop self-discipline?

Answer

First, you get more energy, you really do, because you are able to prevent the loss of energy. When you are self-disciplined, you are also more organized. You are not so scattered. A lot of people waste a lot of their life being scattered, waste their life not really knowing what to do here, what to there and whatever. When you are more disciplined, you can actually stay more focused.

Why do we have such a strict discipline for the retreat? To help every one of you. Now, what if we gave a retreat for ten days or whatever, we say to you at the beginning that there is no organized schedule, that you may come and go as you wish. Would you want that? Most of you really wouldn't want that. You would kind of be looking around for somebody to follow their lead, and you would want somebody in the hall here with you. Would you really sit and meditate in the hall while everybody's walking? Would you really want to walk while everybody is sitting? Would you want to be eating your lunch at any time during the day? Just go down and help yourself. Discipline helps you. It helps you to be more organized, it helps you to give you more ability to put your energy forth in the right direction, in a proper direction, because you're able to be disciplined.

Now, when you think about it, any kind of good business, any business or organization that is organized, for example, the Army, the Navy and the whole military, they are super-disciplined, and as a result of this, they are able to get things done. Now, every big corporation has their own style of discipline. People must behave in a certain way. They have to punch their time in a certain way, they have to work so much, time schedules and whatsoever. Discipline is just part of an organized life.
