Question

Do you advise people who are very much restless, attached to thinking, and have bad concentration, to do a retreat elsewhere to work on that?

Answer

No. Why wouldn't you work with it here? It's quite okay. It's a nice place to work. We would never advise someone to do a retreat elsewhere just because they have a wandering thought, are full of restlessness, attached to thinking, bad concentration... we don't care.

What are you here for? If you were already never restless, never had any attachment to thinking and had perfect concentration, you'd be the one up here teaching, and I'd be the one down there. So, it's okay. It's okay to be restless. It's okay to be attached to your thinking. It's okay to have bad concentration and we work on it here. The point is, whether you're restless or not, does that mean you are compassionate and loving or not? No, it doesn't work that way. A compassionate loving person could be restless. A compassionate loving person could be patient, as well. That doesn't change just because you're restless or not.

How, if you're restless, does that affect your wisdom? Does that mean you are a stupid person or a wise person? It doesn't work that way either. A wise person can be restless at times. A Non-returner, third-level enlightenment, can be restless at times. So being restless, or not, doesn't mean that you're a good meditator, bad meditator, wise, not wise, compassionate, not compassionate.

Being attached to thinking, again, does that stop you from being compassionate? No. Does it stop you from being wise? No. Again, this does not affect what we are trying to develop most, in regards to growth in this practice. Bad concentration? So what? You've all heard me say that we don't care about concentration as much as we care about developing Compassionate Understanding and Wisdom.

For everything that we're really trying to develop most in this practice, these things that you mentioned are not a problem; they're just the normal hindrances that we deal with. So there's no need to think that you can't deal with them here and that you have to go somewhere else to learn how to deal with them. They're all just normal stuff that you can work with right here.
