Question

Could you please talk more about how to develop the Four Unselfish Emotions and the role of the Brahma Viharas?

Answer

Compassion/Lovingkindness. We're giving you a lot of ways to develop Compassion/Lovingkindness. The D/D method, the 1-10-11-1, the waking up in the morning, etc. We give many different types of techniques for developing the Unselfish Emotions of Compassion/Lovingkindness.

Sympathetic Joy, learning how to reflect on the good qualities of ourselves and others, taking joy with them. In the afternoon I'll be leading you in a Sympathetic Joy meditation.

Equanimity. One technique is to, just as we do with Compassion/Lovingkindness meditation, is to think of people, to reflect on their Dukkha, to feel compassion for them, and then instead of giving a Lovingkindness wish, we add, "They are the owner of their own Kamma", or "I am the owner of my own Kamma." - so that we develop more Equanimity towards this suffering.

That's very briefly how to develop the Brahma Viharas. Certainly, during our moment-to-moment practice, if we're using mindfulness and investigation into the hindrances, we're developing more Compassion by opening to Dukkha, having compassion for it, and having the understanding of this helps to develop more Compassion. Because if we're developing our understanding of the Four Noble Truths skillfully, it is the essence of Compassion and Lovingkindness and wishing for the ending of the causes of Dukkha within ourselves and others.
