Question

Is there a physical aspect to confidence/Saddha?

Answer

Saddha is the Pali word generally translated into confidence or sometimes faith. It has to do with having confidence in basically our spiritual practice. Is there a physical aspect to it? It is an interesting question. I think, yes. A physical aspect of having confidence is kind of holding oneself up, a bit stronger than others. A person who is underconfident is often kind of slouching. They don't feel strong in their physical body. A person who is confident has more strength. So, as to a physical aspect, I think there is, and it is interesting that way because all of you will recognize this within yourselves. Sometimes you are feeling confident then you feel like you are going to do something, and other times you are going, "Aahhh, no, I can't do that, I can't do that".

Now, possibly every one of you had a favourite subject in school and you had some which were not your favourite. How did you feel when you were walking into your favourite class, compared to when you went into the other one?

So I think in a similar way with the confidence that we had with our favourite class, and the under-confidence with the non-favourite class it can be seen in our physical posture.
