Question

I have big problems in doing breath awareness, I used to do reflections, is it okay?

Answer

With the meditation techniques that you have been given, it's like a huge toolbox: you have the breath awareness, you have Compassion/Lovingkindness, you have all the different reflections and you get a lot of new ones in this retreat. You have a lot of tools in the box, some of them are going to be more of your favorites than others, that's fine, but you do want to practice all of them. You don't want to get stuck just doing breath awareness, you don't want to get stuck just doing reflections either, so keep them in a balance.

Some techniques can be done every day, like Compassion/Lovingkindness, you can do it every day. Sympathetic Joy meditation you can't do every day, it gets too much, there is not enough people out there to have sympathetic joy with. Doing How Fortunate You Are for an hour every day would also be an overload. Doing long death reflection every day would be an overload. Breath awareness could be done every day.

You can see some of them can be done more than others. So try to balance them in your normal life, not using too much of the one or too much of the other.

You have two main types of meditation; one in which you developing wise thought, the wise reflections, Yonisomanasikara. In all of the reflective meditations, we try to develop wise thought. In the other type of meditation. you are letting go of all thought, the breath awareness, awareness of sensation, the walking meditation, in these types of meditations you letting go of thoughts. So you have two types of meditation.

What the balance is exactly for yourself you have to figure out. Start with 50/50, it might end up 60/40, 40/60 whatever.
