Question

I understand that Buddha said for becoming enlightened the human condition is best, is this right? Can you talk more about this.

Answer

The scriptures says yes, the human condition is a very good realm for practicing, because of the balance between Dukkha and Sukkha. Sukkha is happiness, Dukkha is unsatisfactoriness. Because in the human realm we are not totally overwhelmed by Dukkha as in some of the other realms of existence, there is a certain amount of happiness, there is the capacity to not just be so concerned with our suffering. Yet some humans live in these times in realms where a search for food and survival is their major concern and so they haven't got much time for deeper contemplation.

So even in the human realm you can see human beings who are overwhelmed by Dukkha and don't have the good fortune you have. Also, the human life is not so long that we cannot see impermanence. Apparently in some of the higher realms, in the heaven realms the lifespan is so long that the heavenly beings develop the idea of permanence and it is a bit of a shock describing the death of some of these beings. Everything is going fine, then quickly the body decays and everybody runs away from them because they start to smell terrible. That doesn't sound too nice.

But within the human realm there is the capacity to see impermanence over a shorter time. So these are some of the reasons why the human realm is considered to be a good realm for the development of the teachings to become enlightened, not overwhelmed by Dukkha, having a balance, being able to see the Three Characteristics of Existence, impermanence, Dukkha and Anatta more easily.

Whereas in the animal realm there is a lot more Dukkha, they normally don't have the capacity for abstract thought that human beings may have, at least, I am not aware of it. And so there is not as great an opportunity. And in the lower realms as there is just too much suffering.
