Question

Is it helpful to include my father and mother in a reflection in the following way: "May I be thankful for the good qualities and the conditioning my father and my mother gave me and my I be able to cope with and to overcome the difficulties and problems in my life"?

Answer

Sounds like you are doing a gratitude type of reflection. Certainly being thankful and understanding how our good qualities are so dependent on others is very helpful to let go of focusing just on what we didn't get from our parents. So that seems okay. But when we are thinking of our mother and father in the Compassion/Lovingkindness we would like to take the "I" out of it. So if we are doing a bit of Compassion/Lovingkindness to ourself at that time it's okay. If we are reflecting about our mother and father it may be helpful more to just reflect on their beneficial qualities of Sympathetic Joy with them so we can take the "I" out of it.
