Question

How much do you meditate formally per day?

Answer

Regularly. Regularity is more important than "how much". For example, you're going to brush your teeth every day, which might take two or three minutes. You might do it twice a day, or maybe three times a day for maybe three minutes. Would you consider brushing your teeth for three hours one day, and nothing for the rest of the week?

Regularity is most important when it comes to meditating formally - try to make it regular. Do some every day. Do it morning and evening if you can. Five minutes minimum is great compared to once or twice a week for half an hour. That's not going to do it. Even if you do two hours once a week, that's not going to be as good as five minutes every day. That sounds weird, but we are not looking at just a length element. We are looking for something that is going to be in you every single day. Not just once a week.

Some of you have had difficulty in the past getting a regular meditation practice going in your normal life. When you have talked us about in the private interviews, we have asked you if you could promise to do five minutes every day for one year. There are some of you here in the hall who we know have done it. Those who've done it have come back to us one year later, with often the biggest grin on their face that we could possibly find. They are thrilled and they say, "I did it. I did five minutes every day." Wonderful.

What does this do for a human being if you achieve something like this? You get joy, you get contentment, you get energy. Fine, great. How can you lose? But if you only do once a week for two hours, you are not going to have the same results. And once you do five minutes on a regular basis, on some days you'll find you have more time. Good. Do it for half an hour, do more if you have more time. But you can always go back to the 5 minutes. Now, after you achieved that for one full year or two full years, then try 10 minutes a day, see what happens.
