Question

How can I help a person who is so attached to suffering that she does not feel worthy to come and do a retreat although she read the book "Compassionate Understanding" and thinks it is very good?

Answer

Maybe it's just an excuse. I'm not sure. You can possibly encourage her by reminding her of her beneficial qualities and that everybody normally feels a little bit underconfident in the beginning of a retreat. It's a natural thing. But as we do the retreat we get more understanding. If she's read the book you might encourage her to do more Sympathetic Joy with her good qualities.
