During retreats I tend to sleep less. In the beginning the wake-up bell wakes me up, whereas later in the retreat I wake up one hour before the bell. Could you please explain this phenomenon?

Answer

This happens for many people. Often when we are in retreat, we are not using up a lot of energy in unskilful mental formations. We are learning how to let them go, the meditation itself builds energy and we are also getting energy from mindfulness.
