Question

There is a story in the scriptures and then a quote here "you have been kidnapped with three others, a good friend, someone you don't like and a total stranger, you were ordered to pick one of the three to die" The Buddha says, if your mind moves towards anyone of them, you don't understand my teaching. The first few times I thought of this, my mind always did move to one of the three, but yesterday I went instead to the kidnapper, compassion for him came up, for they were the source of the Dukkha in the story, they were suffering. Is there more to the story/to the teaching then this?
